“Mechanical Transformation of CuI Nanoparticles into Oxidation-Resistant 2D Copper Nanoplates”

Using Fusion AX, Hyeuk Jin Han investigates how copper iodide (CuI) nanoparticles can transform into ultrathin, two-dimensional copper nanoplates through an unusual, non-classical growth process. Using in-situ electron microscopy and modeling, he describes that defect formation, driven by ligands and ions, creates iodine vacancies that enable this phase transformation. The resulting copper nanoplates have very high aspect ratios and are dominated by stable crystal facets, which significantly improve their oxidation resistance. This allows them to remain stable in the air for over 100 days. Overall, the work provides new insight into nanoscale crystallization mechanisms and offers a strategy for designing oxidation-resistant copper nanomaterials with controlled structures.
