Tuesday publication post 📖 In this newest publication, the authors used the #PoseidonAX system to investigate the nanoscale dynamics of copper electrodeposition on glassy carbon using in situ electrochemical liquid-cell TEM (#EC-TEM), combined with cyclic voltammetry.
By directly correlating global electrochemical signals with particle-resolved structural dynamics, the authors reveal that copper nanoparticle formation involves a complex interplay of classical and non-classical growth pathways.
Key findings:
🔬 Beyond radial and dendritic growth, nanoparticles undergo mobility, coalescence, ripening-like mass exchange, and discrete relocation events.
🧲 Individual nanoparticle tracking reveals localized mass-transfer processes, including near one-to-one ripening dynamics and particle–particle interactions.
📊 Ripening, coalescence, and structural rearrangements can occur without a clear signature in the global voltammetric response.
⚡ These observations highlight how nanoscale processes at electrochemical interfaces can remain hidden when relying solely on conventional electrochemical measurements.
💡 By combining in-situ EC-TEM with electrochemical analysis, #PoseidonAX provides direct mechanistic insight into early-stage electrochemical phase formation and the dynamic nature of metal growth.
This work demonstrates the power of #PoseidonAX for visualizing electrochemical processes in real time, providing new insights into nucleation, growth, mass transport, and structural evolution at the nanoscale.
