Understanding Electron Beam-Induced Chemical Polymerization Processes of Small Organic Molecules Using Operando Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy

Poseidon AX Publication Alert in ACS Nano for Materials Science!

Tuesday publication post! 📖 Have you ever thought about trying different liquids in the electron microscope, and not only aqueous solutions? This group at the #InstituteofBasicScience in Korea has looked at how the electron beam can influence different type of solutiosn, including benzene, toluene and more, using the #PoseidonAX system!

By combining real-time LP-TEM, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and a mathematical random search algorithm, the authors:

⚛️ Tracked polymerization of small organic molecules under continuous electron beam irradiation
🔬 Identified key physical & chemical parameters that dictate reaction rates
📈 Developed a predictive model for molecular reactivity based on classical chemistry principles

These insights extend beyond polymerization—they are fundamental to anyone using electron beams to analyze or manipulate soft matter at the nanoscale!

📺The video shows the changes of the liquid solutions under the e-beam irradiation for the different polymerizing solutions.
