Real-Time TEM Observation of the Microstructural Evolution in Silver Nanowires under Heating and Electrical Biasing

Fusion AX Publication Alert in ACS Electr. Mater. on Electronic Devices!

Tuesday publication post! ๐Ÿ“– In this newest published work from Katarzyna Bejtka, Marco Allione, Carlo Ricciardi, Fabrizio Candido Pirri and Gianluca Milano, the Fusion AX system was used to observation of silver nanowires under electrical and thermal stress! Using Fusion AX, the authors investigate the structural and morphological evolution, failure, reconfiguration, and self-healing mechanisms of individual silver nanowires (Ag-NWs) under conditions that closely resemble real device operation.

Key highlights:
๐Ÿ”ฌ Direct visualization of electromigration-driven nanowire breakdown and nanogap formation
โšก Identification of localized Joule heating as a dominant failure mechanism under bias
๐Ÿ”‹ First-hand evidence of electrically induced rewiring and self-healing behavior in Ag NWs
๐Ÿง  Insights into adaptive and memristive responses relevant to neuromorphic devices

This work shows how these nanowires fundamentally reconfigure, which can help design new components for flexible electronics, sensors and neuromorphic systems!
