Multiscale in Situ Analysis of the Zinc Electrodeposition Process in Aqueous Electrolytes

Poseidon AX Publication Alert in ACS Appl. Mater. Interf. on Electrocatalysis

Tuesday publication post 📖 In this newest publication, the authors used the Poseidon AX system to investigate how Zn metal morphology evolves during electrodeposition, using a combination of liquid-phase electrochemical TEM, liquid-phase electrochemical SEM, and in situ optical microscopy.

Key findings:

🔬 Multiscale in situ observations revealed the evolution of Zn morphology during electrodeposition, from nanoscale to larger-scale structures.

⚡ Electrochemical conditions and electrolyte concentration were shown to strongly influence the morphology of deposited Zn.

🌱 Zn dendrite formation was closely linked to the development of the Zn diffusion layer in the liquid electrolyte.

The study demonstrates how combining liquid-phase electrochemical microscopy techniques can provide direct insight into the dynamic processes governing Zn deposition and dendrite growth.

Understanding these mechanisms is essential for improving the stability and performance of rechargeable Zn-anode batteries, which are being explored as promising alternatives for post-lithium energy-storage technologies.

This work highlights the value of #InSitu microscopy for studying electrochemical interfaces and capturing dynamic processes that are difficult to resolve with conventional ex situ characterization.
