In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy of Electrocatalyst Materials: Proposed Workflows, Technical Advances, Challenges, and Lessons Learned

Poseidon AX Publication Alert in Small Methods for Electrocatalysts

Tuesday publication update! 📖 In this newest publication from the #McMasterUniversity authors Ahmed M. Abdellah, Kholoud E. Salem, Liza-Anastasia DiCecco (#PennStateUniversity), Fatma Ismail, Amirhossein Rakhsha, Kathryn Grandfield and Drew Higgins, a workflow in liquid phase TEM is described! Using the #PoseidonAX system as an example, and working heavily with the #AXONSynchronicity software, the authors go over a steadfast workflow for electrochemistry experiments in #LP-TEM.

Challenges that are shown in the paper and discussed in detail:
⚡ Electron beam interactions with the electrolyte and electrode.
🔍 Lack of standardized workflows, making reproducibility difficult.
💧 Complex particle behavior in liquid, complicating data interpretation.

In the video below, an example in situ study of CO₂ reduction (CO₂R) catalysts using copper deposition is shown. Moreover, the paper focusses on different preparation methods via electro-deposition, sputtering, or drop-casting. By providing clear guidance, the authors aim to accelerate the adoption of LP-TEM in electrocatalysis research, paving the way for better catalyst design and improved CO₂ conversion technologies. A must read for new researchers!!
