FEMMS 2026

December 7, 2026 – December 11, 2026

FEMMS (Frontiers of Electron Microscopy and Materials Science) is a biennial meeting focused on the application of electron microscopy, primarily TEM, in materials science. The conference series arose to satisfy the requirements of the electron microscopy community working on materials science problems, which grew explosively in the late 1980’s and has expanded to researchers working with analytical periphery, novel instrumentation, tomography, operando and correlative microscopy, and advancing into the domain of ultrafast time-resolved microscopy. Traditionally, FEMMS brings together approximately 40 invited speakers plus one distinguished lecturer that are world-renowned experts, principal investigators and project leaders, to present their latest advances in the field of electron microscopy in the materials sciences.

The MSA Student Council’s Annual Pre-Meeting Congress will once again highlight outstanding student and early-career research, fostering collaboration and professional growth In addition to the robust scientific program, M&M 2026 will feature the world’s largest annual microscopy exhibition in the Exhibit Hall, showcasing the latest instrumentation, software, and accessories. Engage with exhibitors and attend vendor tutorials held Monday through Wednesday. Additional educational opportunities include focused tutorials, outreach programs, the Technologists’ Forum, and interactive roundtable discussions.

LeHigh Microscopy School

This year, the 52nd annual Lehigh Microscopy School hosted its banquet at the Hotel Bethlehem, where 120 attendees celebrated Dr. Richard Hertzberg’s 60th year of teaching at Lehigh University and Professor Masashi Watanabe’s inaugural year as the director of the Lehigh Microscopy School with great food and conversation. These attendees represented over 50 national labs, government organizations, universities, and companies. These companies included leaders in the field of electron microscopy, including JEOL, TESCAN, ThermoFisher, and Zeiss.

8th International Congress on Operando Spectroscopy

The main objective of this congress is to bring researchers together to discuss the progress of operando methodologies, i.e. characterization of functional materials in their working state. In operando studies, physicochemical methods probe the behavior of working materials while their performance is measured simultaneously. The operando approach is suited to elucidate catalyst structure-activity relationships at the molecular level. Both academia and industry recognize the importance of this approach that is now a well-established research area in catalysis.
